By Michael O’Neill

Katie Taylor continued her winning ways with a very convincing points victory over 2007 European silver medallist, Sandra Brugger of Switzerland at the Royal Hotel and Leisure Centre in her native Bray last night.

This was the first of two weekend bouts for Taylor, who is preparing for the 2012 World Championships in China which also double up as the only female Olympic qualifier. Brugger though ,as always in her career, was a tough opponent who gave of her all.

Taylor had in fact on one previous occasion defeated the Swiss champion in Bray and last night’s victory was never in doubt as she was well on top from the first bell. In the second of the weekend bouts, tonight the Bray native meets a much tougher opponent, World number 10, Ingrid Egner of Norway.

Egner has troubled Taylor in the past, though she has lost twice to the World champion. In June 2010 in the Haringey Box Cup Final at London’ s Alexandra Palace, for example I saw Egner put up a great show with Taylor coming out on top only after a majority judges decision.

After her recent very tough training camps in Georgia and at The Curragh, Taylor was pleased to be back in the ring on Friday – her first bout since annexing her fifth successive European 60kg title in Rotterdam last October.

Last night though there was no doubt about the result and Taylor gained a unanimous points verdict.

"It was a cracking contest and Katie was outstanding, particularly in the first two rounds, said Pat Ryan, who with Zuar Antiar has worked Peter Taylor in many of Katie’s fights at home and abroad over the past five years.

"Katie is certainly moving forward and improving all the time. The Swiss girl was tough. She came to fight and she did that and she deserves respect for that.

"The Norwegian girl will be a different type of opponent tomorrow night and it should be a top class contest."

Taylor heads an Irish squad to face Holland in Dublin and Cavan next month. The Dutch side will include world class stars like Marichelle de Jong and Nouchka Fontijn both of whom struck Gold in Rotterdam.
Also likely to be included is Jessica Belder, the Dutch 60kg champion who also represented her country in Rotterdam.

The meetings between Ireland and Holland signify the first occasion that the IABA has hosted a full women’s international so another milestone in the 101 years history of the IABA.
