El origen del nombre Europa.

El nombre de Europa procede de un personaje de la mitología griega, una mujer fenicia de Tyre, sobre su origen hay dos versiones diferentes. En la más popular, Europa, hija del rey fenicio Agenor, fue seducida por Zeus, transformado en un toro, quien se la llevó a Creta. Allí ella se convertiría en la reina de Creta y madre del famoso rey Minos. Algunas leyendas colocan el origen de la constelación Taurus en este episodio, relacionada con la leyenda del Minotauro. En la otra versión, extendida por Herodotus, ella fue raptada  por los minoicos, en venganza por el rapto de Io, una princesa de Argos. En cualquier caso, estas versiones parecen un intento de racionalizar el mito.
