Netherlands
Folk Music Group Drijfhout Perform in Concert.

The Dutch folk group Drijfhout will be performing in concert on 16th January in the Netherlands at Surhuisterveen. They will also hold a workshop on the same evening. The folk duo mainly plays on Vlieland but has also played at many maritime and folk festivals at home and abroad. Drijfhout has drifted ashore Germany, Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, England, Ireland, France, Belgium and Estonia. The group consists of Ger on vocals, guitar, squeeze-box and tin whistle with music teacher Nils on vocals, fiddle, guitar, squeeze-box and mandolin.??

Germany
Celtic Rock Band Garden of Delight perform in Reinheim.

Weinhof in Reinheim will will play host to Celtic rockers Garden of Delight (G.O.D) on 15th January from 8pm. The band is headed by Michael M. Jung and perform Celtic Rock and Irish Folk songs. G.O.D have been performing for over nine years in Germany, Ireland, the UK and the Netherlands with over 1300 concerts under their belts.

Irish Traditional Muscians Banshee play their Celtic tunes in Germany.

Banshee - Irish trad band

The band Banshee will be playing in Munich on 16th January at 8pm. Banshee combine the traditional sounds of the Celts with modern arrangements and a strong rhythmic base. Banshee is a band playing modern celtic music. Banshee is a group of ambitious people. Banshee is the energy that gets you through ups and downs of life. Banshee is the constant search for beautiful form to go with rich substance. .

France
Irish Literature Lecture in Paris.

As part of the Certificate in Irish Language and Contemporary Irish History and Culture, there will be lectures in Centre Culturel Irlandais on 23rd January and 13th March. These lectures are free to all members of the public as well as certificate students. Both lectures will take place between 10 - 4.30pm and reservation is highly recommended. NUI Maynooth lecturers Prof. Margaret Kelleher and Dr. Colin Coulter will host the two lectures.Prof. Kelleher will discuss Gender and Irish Literature on 23rd January and this event looks set to be an insightful and informative.

InSpain
Los Stompers, the Irish sound from Barcelona, release their new album.

The new album from the “Los Stompers” went on sale a few weeks ago. This group was first formed in Barcelona in 1997 and practises what they call the “Barcelona Irish sound”. This new album is called “Animal, Vegetable, Miserable”.
The members of Los Stompers, all professional musicians, are Kiko Fergananym (bass guitar, mandolin and vocals), Dara Luskin (bass guitar), Brian O’Mahony (guitar and vocals), David Holmes (accordion and fiddle) and Marcos Lopez (drums).
Brian, who has a doctorate in science and is now fully dedicated to music, joined the group in 2006. We had the pleasure of talking to him recently about the new album.

Irish Heartbeat with Dervish.

The use of new technologies, such as the internet, is helping to spread aspects of Irish culture to all corners of the world. The Irish traditional music scene was enriched in 2009 by the Irish Heartbeat with Dervish initiative, which involved the internet broadcasting of live performance radio shows direct from Ireland with many of the very best exponents of Irish traditional music as guests.
With the permission of Dervish as a present to all of their fans and friends, one of these radio shows has been made available to download free of charge from the Irish Heartbeat website. The show consists of nearly a full hour of live music and craic and features very special guests including Sean Keane, Frankie Gavin and Michelle Lally.

Croatia
Belfast Food with live concert in the end of January in Osijek.

Belfast Food are giving live concert on January 30th in Osijek. The event is to take place in Mini Teatr ( Mini Theater). To get more information about the tickets contact the Theater.
The three young men who gathered the today’s BELFAST FOOD started their work in 1992.
Mostly influenced by “THE CHIEFTAINS” and “THE DUBLINERS”, they also played the instrumental music of legendary folk groups The Bothy Band, Planxty, and De Dannan. This music is traditional dance music dating from the eighteenth century and is played fast and furious.
Presently, the band is producing live CD and DVD album recorded during St. Patrick’s Day celebration in 2007.

Poland
Shannon has already planned concerts in March!

Shannon- the Celtic Shannon band- one of the most known Irish and Celtic music bands in Poland has already planned concert during St. Patrick's celebrations.
The band has announced 6 concerts in this period.
Shannon band was born in early 1994. They have so far recorded five albums, one soundtrack and also composed some music for an Irish dance show.
Shannon perform in about a hundred concerts every year mainly in Europe. Shannon have also taken part in celebrations of the Interceltique Festival du Lorient in Britany (France) as well as often performing in Denmark and Germany. Shannon on occasion have also played with other famous musicians, one of them being Polish jazz violinist - Michal Urbaniak.
Thanks to a mix of traditional sounds and modern composition,they offer a great sound.

Sweden
An Eitre Music and Theatre Tour of Sörmlands.

Celtic band An Eitre will be beginning a music and theatre tour of Sweden on 15th March and running until 28th. An Eitre are a spectacular five piece band who have their own interpretation of Irish traditional music. Driving Irish instrumental dance tunes and ballads and stories from the vast store of Irish and Scottish songs. Eitre have played together since January 2003 frequently touring Sweden and Germany, and Belgium lately.

Finland
Films Available from Irish Finnish Society DVD Library.

The Irish Finnish Society's DVD Library is available to members of the IFS and is funded by members' subscriptions. The films consist of titles that the members suggest. There are currently Finnish language DVDs available but more may be expanded upon members' requests. Suggestions for future DVDs can be sent to dvd@irfinsoc.com. The DVDs are free of charge for members to borrow, but there is a 20 Euro deposit that is refundable upon return of the DVD. You can take out 2 DVDs at any one time and can keep them for a maximum of one week.

Show-jumping
Show-jumping Ireland's Josh Kerrigan in Zwolle Netherlands.

Josh Kerrigan is Ireland's sole representative in the two-star international show this weekend, in Zwolle.
Zwolle, the Netherlands hosts a CSI 2* Show-juming event this weekend. It begins today 14th January and runs through to the 17th.
Josh Kerrigan may be Ireland's only person competing but he has 3 horses for the weekend, with Zanra Z, BMC Tolan R and Winsom.

Ireland's top 4 show-jumping riders compete in Basel's first four-star international show in Switzerland.

OUR of Ireland's highest world-ranked riders will take part in Basel's first four-star international show, beginning in Switzerland later today (Thursday).
Held in the city's St. Jakobshalle, which has traditionally hosted the Basel Equestrian Week during September, the new January show will feature 12 competitions in all, culminating in the 150,000 euro Basel Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon.
Ireland's Jessica Kurten, currently ranked 15th in the world, will line out with three horses, as will Tipperary-born Denis Lynch (ranked 17th), Meath's Cian O'Connor (31st), and Cork's Billy Twomey (41st).

European Union
Máire Geoghegan-Quinn appears before European Parliament Committee.

Red tape hindering companies from taking part in EU research programmes, the declining number of scientists in Europe and the high cost of patents were among issues raised by MEPs at the hearing of Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, Commissioner-designate for Research, Innovation and Science. Ms Geoghegan-Quinn was appearing yesterday before the European Parliament's Industry, Research and Energy Committee. She emphasised that 'the EU must become a true innovation union' and that her 'task will be to put research, innovation and science at the heart of EU policies.'

Norway
Norwegian Irish Business Association Hosts Ryanair Presentation.

The Norwegian Irish Business Association will play host to a Ryanair presentation on 20th January from 8.30am to 10am at the German-Norwegian Chamber of commerce.NIBA and its Irish counterpart NIBC are the premier contact points for companies doing business between the two countries, whether as subsidiaries of Irish/Norwegian parents or as importers, exporters or providers of services. They organise seminars and meetings throughout the year and are a very useful meeting point and source of information.

Danish Irish Society AGM to be held in February.

The Danish Irish Society want to wish Happy New Year to all members from Elsebeth, Ane Luise, Bill, Marcus & Mich (The committee of the Danish Irish Society).
